BACK PAIN
Sciatica

Back pain can be caused by many different issues. The most common are muscle strains, however there may also be associated complications, such as vertebral disc bulging.
Bulging or herniated discs can press against spinal nerve roots as they exit the spinal column. This is the most common cause of sciatica, which may manifest anywhere from the lower back and buttock, through the leg, right down to the toes and sole of the feet.
Releasing the deep muscles of the spine is key to taking pressure off the nerve as it exits or traverses past the disc injury. The best way to do this is through needling these muscles.
Usually this is painless and results in only a dull spreading ache, as the muscles are releasing. Electro acupuncture type treatment is also utilised, to help the process along. Swipe left once on the video below to get the full picture.
Your back locking up is another common complaint, and may occur alongside sciatica, or as a separate issue. This is often your hip flexors tightening up.
Some common signs of hip flexor tightness include trouble getting up from a seated position, feeling locked up in the lumbar area, a tight band across the lower back, and in the worse cases it can feel as if someone is whacking you in the back as you try to move.
This is often misdiagnosed, and treatment focusses on the lower back muscles only. Have a look at the second video below to get the full picture. Needling the psoas and stretching the muscle group is the best way to resolve and self manage the problem.
